 Instructors

The diving staff at Tech Asia have over forty years of combined teaching experience and cumulatively logged more than 15,000 dives in various locations.

Dave Ross

Born in London in 1964. Dave is a Geologist by education. He learned to dive whilst living and working out of Hong Kong, and turned professional, as a Divemaster in 1991 and then a PADI Instructor in 1992.

When IANTD came to the Philippines in '95 he was among the first group of Instructors certified, and currently holds the ratings of Trimix Instructor, Draeger Rebreather Instructor and Normoxic Trimix Instructor Trainer. He is also a DAN Instructor teaching Oxygen Provider courses, and covers Gas Blending programs for Nitrox and Trimix through DSAT. He has logged over 6,800 dives in the last thirteen years, and trained more than 1000 divers at all levels.

Around the time Tech Asia formed in 2000, Dave developed a strong interest in overhead environment diving, and has since been lucky enough to set up and run trips to many of the Philippines historic wreck sites, and to gain experience with expedition level international travel, such as organizing the first ever helium based diving of Truk Lagoons’ Japanese Fleet. Andy Norman

Also from the UK, Portsmouth being home, Andy came to the Philippines after a long stint in Saudi as an RAF aircraft engineer. In the Middle East he was heavily involved with BSAC, and in the Philippines became a partner in Asia Divers in the late eighties. Although a BSAC Advanced Instructor, PADI Master Instructor and also being involved in that first IANTD Crossover, Andy is now less often found in the water. Gas Blending programs, Compressor Workshops, and specialized Equipment Seminars however remain his forte, and his technical expertise is drawn upon by all other dive centers in the area.

Sam Collett

Another Brit, originally from Brighton, Sam began diving at Asia Divers in 1994. He was at that time living in Sydney and owned a very successful Stone Masonry and Restoration business which he ultimately sold and moved to full time diving as a career. Actively teaching all IANTD courses up to Trimix and Technical Wreck Diver, plus able to teach through DSAT through to Tec Trimix, Sam's instructional and supervisory skill, patience, and extreme attention to individuals divers particular needs and abilities have made him a tremendously popular and highly respected member of the Tech Asia team, and in the field of Philippine technical diving generally. Like Dave, Sam also involves himself actively in dive travel, having put together excursions all over the Philippines, and from Micronesia to the Burma Banks.

Martin Lorenzo

From the Philippines, resident in Manila, Martin is available on request to teach GUE DIR Fundamentals courses at Tech Asia. Martin has been diving for the past nine years, and became a NAUI and PADI dive professional (DM) in 1996 working in different resorts and live-aboard operations around the Philippines. His technical diving also began in 1996, and he pursued this avenue in diving and became an IANTD Technical Instructor in 1998. He and Dave spent time diving together on numerous occasions during training activities over the years as they moved through the IANTD curriculum.

Now qualified through GUE at the Cave 1 and Tech II levels , he has been traveling back to the US twice a year (mostly in Seattle, WA and Florida) and different parts of Asia to further expose himself to different diving environments such as cold water and warm water reef diving outside the country. In recent years Martin dedicated himself to becoming a GUE Instructor under the guidance of Jarrod Jablonski, Andrew Georgitsis and David Rhea of GUE, an endeavor which reached completion in January 2003 at High Springs, Florida.

Ralph Joerger

From Germany, Ralph began his diving 1988 in Belize. Four years later he moved to the Philippines, enrolled in a Divemaster course, subsequently became an Instructor in 1995 and has remained in full time diving ever since.

Almost as soon as technical diving appeared in the Philippines Ralph got himself keenly involved. At the diver level he is qualified through full Trimix, Wreck, and Cave, and has been an IANTD Technical Instructor since 1999, now teaching to IANTD Normoxic Trimix level. He also can present full Trimix and Gas Blending through DSAT.

A great deal of his professional diving in the Philippines has been in the Visayas where he explored a number of sea caves off of Moalboal. He was also for several years involved and in the management and running of the liveaboard MV Tabibuga, which afforded him the opportunity to dive most of the Philippines premier dive sites and gain familiarity with many of our wrecks, such as the Japanese shipwrecks of Coron Bay, the Malapascua wrecks Dona Marilyn and Pioneer Cebu, various sites off Panay and Bantayan Island, plus our more local MV Mactan. He has also explored the spectacular Paglugaban Cave near Miniloc in Palawan.

Ralph and Dave first dived together in Subic Bay in 2000, and having kept in occasional touch, Ralph relocated to join Tech Asia in Puerto Galera at the end of 2004.

Yoon Ho Song

Yoon Ho Song, better known to most of us as Tex, comes from Ulsan City in Korea. A Chemistry graduate who turned to a career as a Marine Engineer, Tex began diving back in 1994. Several years in and out of Puerto Galera and surrounds as a part time Divemaster lead him finally to his PADI Instructor course with Asia Divers in 2002, and then to Tech Asia for training as an IANTD diver and later instructor. Tex is an extremely keen Wreck Diver, a conscientious instructor with IANTD to the Advanced Recreational Trimix Level, and is one of a probably very small population of Korean GUE certified divers. His grasp of technical divings academics, and his translational abilities have allowed him to take an extremely active assisting role in many of the higher level trimix courses we have conducted.
