PADI INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT COURSE (IDC)
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a 9-day program designed to prepare qualified candidates to become PADI Instructors.
The IDC is divided into two distinct segments. The first segment is the 4-day PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course. The second portion is the 5-day PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Together the two courses combine to encompass the entire IDC. Both courses must be completed before attending the PADI Instructor Examination (IE) . Our IDC is actually run as four programs in one starting with the 4-day free IDC Pre-Study and Preparation Workshop , followed by the 4-day Assistant Instructor course, followed by the 2-day Emergency First Response Instructor course and finally the Open Water Scuba Instructor program which precedes the PADI Instructor Examination.
Each segment can be scheduled as a stand-alone course or completed all at one time. You have several training options and flexibility for reaching your professional goals depending on your current certification level, experience level, time restraints, etc. Options include:
- For PADI Divemasters – you may choose just to attend the AI course first and later on after gaining more experience go on to complete the OWSI program.
- For PADI Divemasters – you may attend the full IDC and, upon successful completion, go on to the IE (as long as all other IE prerequisites are met).
- For PADI Divemasters with between 60 and 100 dives – because Asia Divers is a PADI 5 Star Career Development Center you may attend the full IDC and provided you have been certified 6 months, have logged 60 dives, are a candidate of our 6 week career development program, or are enrolled in 5 pre- and/or post-IDC courses (such as EFR Instructor, Specialty Instructor, etc.), upon successful completion, go on to the IE (as long as all other IE prerequisites are met). You must also be certified as an Assistant Instructor. However your paperwork will not be processed until you meet the100-logged dives and you will be certified once your graduation registration packets and IE forms have been processed.
- For PADI Assistant Instructors – you may attend the OWSI program only and, upon successful completion, go on to the IE (as long as all other IE prerequisites are met). Please consult us for advice. Our advice will be based on your attitude, experience, level of dive knowledge, diving ability, overall understanding of the dive market and consumer attitudes, and your ability to grasp new concepts through independent study. Remedial training, additional IDC curriculum presentations, or full IDC with or without the Pre-Study and Preparation Workshop may be advised.
- For Scuba Instructors affiliated with other certification organizations you may attend an OWSI program only and, upon successful completion go on to the IE. Please consult us for advice. Our advice will be based on your attitude, experience, level of dive knowledge, diving ability, overall understanding of the dive market and consumer attitudes and your ability to grasp new concepts through independent study. Remedial training, additional IDC curriculum presentations, or full IDC with or without the Pre-Study and Preparation Workshop may be advised.
- For Scuba Instructors or dive supervisors affiliated with other certification organizations you may choose to attend the full IDC and, upon successful completion go on to the IE.
- Our IDC Pre-Study and Preparation Workshop is optional but highly recommended for everyone. Preparation is the key to your success. Please see our separate document on How to Prepare for the IDC.
The IDC curriculum emphasis is focused on development, not tests or stress. This makes learning easier and more relaxed.
